Jo de Banzie

Jo de Banzie employs the materiality of ancient and experimental photographic processes to explore memory and place. Her work combines historical research and archive material with oral history and the imagined to create visual narratives as seen through a female gaze. She applies a process-led approach and the use of conceptually relevant materials in visualising the unseen. Jo de Banzie is particularly interested in motherhood within the context of war. She uses her own family stories as a starting point; her work explores themes of nurture and loss. Her work is engaged with themes that remain universally relevant.

Biography

Jo de Banzie is a London-based artist interested in the interplay between the materiality of the photographic process and the representation of memory and place. After a career as a professional photographer in portraiture, Jo de Banzie returned to the analogue practice and now combines her knowledge of alternative processes with an interest in storytelling and social history. As a graduate of the London College of Communication’s Photojournalism & Documentary Photography master’s programme, she has exhibited in several group and solo shows. Her work is kept in private and museum collections, including the National Art Library Collection at the V&A.
