About the Artist

Gert Motmans

Motmans’ work balances between figurative and abstract, complexity and simplicity. The artist puts his identity, personality, personal experiences and dreams in his collages. The fragile works feed on romanticism as well as minimalism. Despite its personal nature, his intimate work appeals to universal values and feelings. Landscapes and male figures are recurring themes. During childhood, Gert struggled with his sexuality and found protection and security in nature, where seclusion and daydreaming allowed him to escape reality. Motmans’ pictures express a desire for another world—a longing for familiarity and nostalgia. His images embrace a threatening, futuristic vision.
